Autumn

Saturday was one of those sort of cloudy, dreary days, so we decided to go up in the hills for the day. Just south of Salt Lake Valley is Utah Valley, home to BYU and Provo. At the north end of Utah Valley, branching off to the east, is American Fork Canyon. The road through it takes you up over the top and down into Provo Canyon, the home of Sundance. The drive is quite scenic. There was a light rain in American Fork, with snow in the higher elevations as we journeyed toward the summit. Going down the other side we went down through snow, and into patches of rain and sunlight. The temperature was not too bad; a long-sleeve shirt and a light vest were enough to stay warm. It was a relaxing day, but winter is definitely on it's way.
The first two pictures are from the American Fork side, the bottom two are from the Sundance side. The one of the stream is at Sundance Institute, where it was not snowing at all (the sun was shining) at the time I took the photo.

The pictures are beautiful. It is still summer time here. Hot and humid.

Oooooh.... gorgeous pictures! The leaves are changing here, and it's been getting chilly. However, at the moment we're in the midst of indian summer, so the shorts and tank tops made their return today.

Becky-it gets a bit busy in the summer; in the winter it is too cold for camping.
Nickel-here where I live it is chilly, but we still haven't had a frost yet, it has been 50 during the day and 40 at night.
Terri-the higher elevations are all changing, but down here (I live at about 4500ft above sea level) the trees aren't changing quite yet.
JDP-this is nothing, you should see the Uintas.
GuyK-haven't seen any elk, but I have spotted moose, deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and black bear up American Fork.

Beautiful pictures. This has been the most beautiful Fall in years. The temps have been great too.

Excellent pics, sir.

Quite beautiful scenery you have at your disposal. October is my favorite month, and this proves to me that there are justifications for that.

Thanks for sharing your breathtaking pictures. You are so fortunate to live in a place like this. When I was working for the government I made a trip to Salt Lake and had the chance to take a bus trip to Sundance.

Never could I just say Utah Valley... isn't it nicknamed Happy Valley? Always felt weird venturing down that way, like another planet.

Anyway, I absolutely treasure my time spent living in Salt Lake and scenes like these are one of the biggest reasons why. There's been snow on the ground here in Fairbanks for about a week now, I think... but it's nowhere as near to beautiful as the Wasatch Range in your wonderful pictures!
